Scientist Discover gene that regulates alcohol tolerance

turns out women don't have it

Scientists have isolated the gene that determines how quickly people become drunk. Researchers from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine analyzed the genetic make up of 237 college-age siblings who reported having an alcoholic parent. The siblings were also tested on how many drinks are required for them to get drunk.

What the scientists discovered is that those with the gene CYP2EI are likely to get sloshed after only a few drinks, and this low tolerance seems to protect them from becoming alcoholics themselves. It is estimated that 10 to 20 percent of the population has this gene variant.

You're never going to remember CYP2EI, so it's probably best just to think of it as "the cheap-date gene."
